Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, and Vyacheslav Makarov, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, congratulated St. Petersburg residents on the Siege of Leningrad Breakthrough Day.

’77 years ago, the troops of the Leningrad and the Volkhov Fronts linked up after violent battles’, their joint message goes.

On this day, the city suffering from starvation, bombardment and cold received an overland connection with the rest of the country.

These days, St. Petersburg is commemorating the heroes who stormed the Nazi fortifications and the workers who built a bridge across the Neva and a railway line to bring food into the starving city.

Breaking the Siege of Leningrad gave the people of the city confidence and faith in the future victory.

St. Petersburg and its people will always remember and honour the heroes who defended them.

‘We bow our heads in respect of our honoured veterans and wish all of you peace, well-being, and all the best!’ the message goes.

The Siege of Leningrad was broken on January 18, 1943 as a result of the Operation Iskra (‘Spark’). The Siege was lifted altogether on January 27, 1944.
